Self-experimenting — mostly via nutritional therapy — has been a tedious ride, but there were a few very interesting moments that underscored for me how little we know about the brain.
One of the weirdest effects, for example, with niacinamide, was psychological. After one day on a big dose, for several hours,
“. . . some internal concept of myself I hadn’t even known existed, much less that it was lacking, [became] more fleshed out and solid. In CGI terms, you could say it went from being a wire-frame model to a rendered animation.”
Other intriguing experiences:
- Fun with ancient psychoactives: blue lotus and African dream root: The latter can be extremely entertaining but do your research first or you’ll waste a lot of time.
- Hypnagogic fun with melatonin: Experiences with “waking dreams.”
- And then there was the time vitamin B-complex drove me insane…
- Amusing effects of correcting a vitamin or mineral deficiency: Random memories from nowhere; vivid dreams; aches in old bone injuries; improved ability to guesstimate.
- SSRI withdrawal, sleep paralysis, and pseudo-alien abduction attempts: Not as fun as it sounds.
- Another weird deficiency symptom: oversensitive hearing: Are you driven made by people chewing? By your idiotic, inbred neighbors? Read this.
- Another unexpected side effect of repletion: expanded horizons: iodine and Japanese movies.
- OTC psychoactives: Explains the appeal of cathedrals and perfume.
